The house that became a home
This is the story of a girl whose life changed after her parents attended the Parenting Challenge: “It gave me something every child longs for.”
“There was a time when my home did not feel warm and happy to me. I’m Sanjana and I’m 14. I live in a small village in Purnea, India. My father works as a labourer, and my mother manages our home along with a small shop. Apart from my studies, I also help my mother with household chores every day.
Growing up, I craved for my family’s affection. My mother would often scold me over small mistakes, and she rarely had time to sit with me or listen to me. My father was always busy with work and never helped much at home or spent time with us. I used to quietly watch other children laughing and talking with their parents, and deep inside, I wished my family could be like that too. I always wanted to sit beside my parents, share my feelings, play with them, and feel close to them. But those moments never came. Slowly, I stopped expressing my feelings because I felt no one would understand me. Many nights, I would silently cry and keep my pain hidden in my heart. When I was sad or worried, I never had the courage to share it with my parents. Even my friends could not understand why I was angry and bitter all the time.
In December 2024, something beautiful began to change in our family. My parents could no longer ignore how unhappy I was and decided to see what the Parenting Challenge was about. They attended and completed all six sessions conducted by Help a Child. Through these sessions, they learned the importance of raising children with love, patience, and understanding. They learned how gentle communication builds trust, how spending time together strengthens relationships, how parents should work together and share responsibilities, and how every child needs emotional support, care, and encouragement to grow confidently.
After the sessions, I slowly started noticing changes at home that I had always dreamed of. My mother began speaking to me softly and listening to me carefully. Instead of shouting, she started understanding my feelings. My father also changed. He now participates in household work and spends time with our family after returning home. For the first time, we started sitting together, eating together, talking, laughing, and even playing together. Those small moments meant everything to me.
The home that once felt silent and heavy slowly became filled with love and warmth. I no longer feel afraid to speak. Now, I share my thoughts, feelings, and problems openly with my parents because I know they will listen to me with care.
I also attend the Child Opportunity Centre (COC) regularly, where I learn new things and gain confidence. I feel I can share my thoughts with my friends too. Today, I feel happier, stronger, and emotionally connected to my family. I know that even when life is hard for me, they will be there to support me. The Parenting Challenge did not just change their behaviour but also changed my childhood. It gave me something every child longs for: love, attention, understanding, and the feeling of truly belonging in my own home.”
