Early Childhood Development

Help a Child Burundi brings communities, government and partners together to give young children the best possible start in life through a holistic approach to Early Childhood Development.

84,162 young children supported in 2025
100 Child-Friendly Spaces supported in 2025

We work to ensure vulnerable children have access to their basic rights, including quality Early Childhood Development (ECD) services such as preschool education, healthcare, nutrition, Water, Sanitation and Hygiene, and protection. By combining community-based action guided by national strategies and policies, we help strengthen ECD practices and systems across Burundi.

As a trusted strategic partner, we support government-led initiatives and contribute to advancing the country’s ECD priorities.

Programme highlights:

  • Early Childhood Education: Supporting the construction and rehabilitation of preschool classrooms, strengthening teachers' capacities, and creating playing and stimulating spaces.
  • Healthcare: Organising awareness-raising and educational sessions for parents, particularly pregnant and breastfeeding women, on antenatal care (ANC), vaccination, maternal and child health, and disease prevention.
  • Nutrition: Promotion of balanced nutrition for children, pregnant and breastfeeding women, and the treatment of malnutrition.
  • Water, sanitation and hygiene: Improving access to safe drinking water, constructing sanitation facilities, and raising awareness of good hygiene practices.
