Food Security & Livelihoods

Help a Child Burundi assists parents by increasing production, diversifying income, saving for the future and ensuring that their children are well-nourished, so that they thrive and reach their full potential. We believe that sustainable food security goes beyond food availability. It requires empowered households, resilient livelihoods, access to financial services, and communities equipped to adapt to changing environmental and economic conditions.

Our interventions focus on promoting sustainable agricultural production by improving access to land, quality seeds, agricultural tools and climate-smart farming practices to increase food production and household food availability. We also promote nutrition and food security through improved food consumption, dietary diversity and nutrition-sensitive practices that enhance the well-being of children and their families.

To strengthen household resilience and economic independence, we support income-generating activities and small-scale enterprises, while facilitating access to savings, loans and financial resources through Self-Help Groups (SHGs), local microfinance institutions and revolving funds.

We empower families and communities to identify their priorities, develop household development plans and implement community-led initiatives through the Participatory Integrated Planning (PIP) approach. In addition, we promote adaptation of climate change and disaster risk reduction through climate-resilient livelihoods, sustainable natural resource management and community-based measures that strengthen disaster preparedness and reduce vulnerability to climate-related shocks.

Humanitarian assistance and recovery
Help a Child Burundi empowers vulnerable communities to move beyond humanitarian assistance towards greater self-reliance and economic resilience. In collaboration with partners such as WFP, we support internally displaced people, refugees, returnees and vulnerable households through cash and food assistance, livelihood support and community reintegration programmes.

Alongside immediate relief, we invest in sustainable opportunities through social protection, financial inclusion, entrepreneurship training, climate-smart agriculture and vocational skills development. We also support community-led initiatives that rehabilitate local infrastructure, strengthen livelihoods and create opportunities for economic recovery.

Resilience and inclusivity
Our approach combines transparent and inclusive assistance with community participation, accountability and data-informed programming. By connecting humanitarian relief with long-term economic opportunities, Help a Child Burundi helps communities withstand shocks, strengthen local economies and reduce long-term dependency on aid, while contributing to more resilient and inclusive social protection systems.
