Sexual & Gender-Based Violence

Help a Child DRC works to prevent and respond to Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV), which poses a serious threat to the safety and well-being of women, girls and children in eastern DRC, particularly in communities affected by conflict, displacement and insecurity.

Raising awareness of SGBV, addressing harmful social and cultural norms, and encouraging both women and men to take an active role in preventing violence are important parts in our programmes. Through community dialogues and awareness-raising sessions, we aim to strengthen knowledge, challenge gender inequality and empower communities to create safer environments.

One of Help a Child’s key programmes is Empowered 2 Protect (E2P), a community-based programme designed to strengthen the capacity of individuals and communities to prevent and respond to sexual and gender-based violence. The programme combines interactive awareness sessions with practical prevention strategies and can include the INVI bracelet, a non-violent self-defence tool intended to deter potential attackers and attract attention during an assault.

Psychosocial support

Alongside prevention, Help a Child DRC also contributes to the response to sexual violence through a partnership with Medair that facilitates access to medical and psychosocial support for survivors. By combining community empowerment, prevention and access to support, the organisation aims to strengthen protection, resilience and the safety of vulnerable people.
